history in missions
Organized through the Woman’s Missionary Union and our brotherhood of deacons, mission efforts focus on disaster relief, local ministry in hospitals, nursing homes, prison ministry in the Clark County jail, and ministry with various community service organizations. Specifically, Central helps to collect canned food for Operation Happiness (a community-wide endeavor for the needy) and cooperates integrally with the Clark Community Service Center; assisting families in need and transients who pass through our community.
In 1987 the Church voted to move missions month to November to afford more time and effort to be applied to missionary endeavor and to alleviate the challenges of promoting missions during the Christmas season.
In 1996, Central voted to promote the international, national and state mission emphases according to the convention’s calendared dates but also to encourage the year-round acceptance of gifts for missions.
On December 31st all missions gifts received during the calendar year are then sent to the Kentucky Baptist Convention designated as follows:
Lottie Moon Christmas Offering (International) – 70%
Annie Armstrong Offering (North American) – 20%
Eliza Broadus Offering (State) – 10%.
Besides these missions gifts, our budget specifies 11.25% of undesignated receipts will go for the Cooperative Program and 2.5% will be given to the Boone’s Creek Baptist Association. Special gifts have also been designated from time to time to help mission teams and the people where our teams have gone to minister.
In the last 20 years, more than15 missions trips within the United States and 16 mission trips in foreign countries have been undertaken. Internationally, our members have contributed to missionary work in Australia, Brazil, China, the Middle East, Russia, Senegal and most recently, France. Some of the teams from Central collaborated with World Changers International. State-side, mission work has been done in Georgia, Mississipi, South Carolina, Virginia and, most recently, Eastern Kentucky. Our teams have contributed to construction projects, disaster relief efforts in partnership with the KBC and SBC, evangelistic campaigns, medical missions and back-yard Bible clubs.
